2017 League Information

Unless otherwise stated the Colorado Youth Football League (CYFL) Rulebook, all games will follow the rules established by the National Federation of High School Rules (NFHS). NFHS rules are the standard in high school sports rules and regulations. The officiating for the league will be done by certified CHSAA Officials. Please contact a CYFL representative for rule clarification or with any questions you may have.

Divisions: (Age as of July 31, 2017) Max age 14

  1. Unweighted:
        6u (7 man), 7u, 8u, 9u, 10u, 11u, 12u, 13u/14u  
  • All divisions are competitive with no weight restrictions.


  • Teams shall register in a division based on age level requirements for participation. 
  • Players will be allowed to play in two different divisions within the same organization. Players may only play up and cannot play down in younger divisions. *Please Note, schedules will NOT accommodate dual rostered players.*
  • Every team is required to present their CYFL League Certified Roster to opposing team on Game Day and have their Team Book present at all games containing:
    1) Signed 
    CYFL Registration Form Waiver.
    2) Copy of player’s
    AAU Individual Membership ID
    3) Player Proof of Age Color Copy of Government Issued Photo ID- CO State Issued ID Card,

US Passport or Dependent Military ID.

The CYFL Staff for certification on Sunday, August 27, 2017. Team Books will not be accepted if the required documents for any player or coach are missing.

  • Any team attempting to defraud the age requirements will be subject to automatic disqualification and removed from the league and/or the coach will be banned from future CYFL participation. 
  • League Schedule will be posted on or by August 31, 2107.


  • Unlimited Roster of registered players and a minimum of (14) with up to 10 registered coaches per team roster. 
  • NO High School player regardless of age are allowed on any team roster
  • Once a Player is certified onto a team roster by the CYFL, that player will not be permitted to switch teams after FINAL ROSTER CHECK. NO EXCEPTIONS! 
  • Master Team Roster must be emailed to no later than August 26, 2017
  • September 12, 2017 last day to add new players to team roster. $50 Roster Change fee will apply and no other players can be added to the team roster after this date. If a team has less than 14 players they may add additional players to get to 14 during the season.


  • Every coach must be USA Football/Heads Up Certified Level 1 or CHSSA Coaching Certification, Positive Coaching Alliance & Non-Athlete AAU Membership (includes background check)
  • Every coach must have a color photo copy of their ID with each team book.
  • A maximum of 10 roster personnel (assistant coaches, team manager, team medic, water person,  team photographer will be allowed on the sidelines during any game play. All sideline staff must have their team badge with photo ID at every game. No other individuals will be permitted to be on the sidelines with the team besides uniformed cheerleaders. No Exceptions!
  • The head coach must be a minimum of 21 years of age. All other assistant coaches and team personnel must be a minimum of 16 years of age. Assistants under the age of 18 must provide a Code of Conduct form signed by his or her parent. These documents should be placed in the back of the Team Book with coaches photos.
  • The head coach is responsible for all players, cheerleaders, parents, team staff, volunteers, etc. on his or her sidelines.

-6U, 7U, 8U, 9U:

  • One coach from each team shall be permitted to be on the field during the game for. It is up to the head coach to determine who will be on the field at any given time during the game.
  • Offensive and defensive coaches must be at least 15 yards off the line of scrimmage. If any coach interferes with the play, accidentally or intentionally, an automatic 15-yard penalty will be assessed to the team. Two (2) penalties will result in a head coach ejection.
  • The defensive coach must step out of the end zone on any plays inside the 20-yard line (red zone).
  • There will be live kickoffs from the 40 yard line. Fumbles and Interceptions are live. Punts and Field Goals will be LIVE. 
  • Coaches must STOP instructing the players once the player’s line up to the ball and the quarterback begins his cadence.


  • All teams and/or organizations will need to furnish their own required playing equipment including helmets with face guard with a properly fitted chin strap, mouthpiece (cannot be clear or white), shoulder pads (worn to appropriate Body Mass Index), 7-piece pads, cleats (metal cleats or cleats with any exposed metal are prohibited), athletic support (compression shorts; no hard cups) and matching game uniforms.
  • Tinted visors are prohibited. All visors worn must be clear, unless a Dr.’s note is present and valid
  • All eye glasses must be made of non-shattering glass.
  •  No jewelry can be worn during the games. NO EXCEPTIONS. Includes necklaces, piercings, watches, bracelets, rings, etc.
  • No electronic communication devices/equipment is allowed.


Playing Field Dimensions/Game Format:

  • All tackle football divisions will play on regulation HS fields measuring 100 yards long and 50 yards wide. Each team will provide their own youth size game ball to be used according to the proper divisional play (6u-9u PeeWee, 10u-12u Junior & 13u/14u Youth).
  • Each home team is required to supply the chain gang for their game.
  • Each team will receive three (3) time-outs per half.
  • National Federation High School rules in effect unless stated by league rules otherwise.
  • The CYFL will use a 4 15-minute running clock quarters for 10u, 11u, 12u, 13/14u. The younger age divisions 6u, 7u, 8u, 9u divisions will use 4-12-minute running clock quarters and all divisions will have a 10 minute Halftime. Clock will stop during all time-outs and during the last 2-minutes of the 2nd & 4th quarters on incomplete passes and out of bounds plays.
  • Touchdowns=  6 Points, PAT (3 yard line)= 2 Points Pass/Run, 1 Point Kick

OVERTIME: (Deepest Penetration)

In case of overtime, there will be a coin flip; the winning team of the coin flip will have the choice of offense or defense, the ball will be placed at the 50-yard line. If team fails to score in four downs, turn over on downs and the opposing team will have four downs. If neither team scores whichever team gained the most yards in 4 downs will be determined the winner.


Any team that has a 21 point lead at the 2:00 warning the clock will not stop and will continue to run unless a timeout is called.


Coaches that are ejected must pay a $250 fine or serve a 2 game suspension before they return to coach

Players that are ejected must sit out the next scheduled game

Parents that are ejected their child is subject to be removed from the game as well


All teams must be inside the stadium or field 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time

High School Stadium (Field) School Zone Rules:

Field- Absolutely at NO TIME will there be Sunflower Seeds, Any Flavored Sports Drinks like Gatorade or Powerade, No Food will be permitted on the track or playing field.




·         Games start weekend of Saturday/Sunday, September 10-11, 2016 and conclude with the AAU Colorado Youth Football State Championships  on Saturday and Sunday, November 12-13, 2016 at the Evie Dennis Field @ DSST in Green Valley Ranch. The Colorado Youth Fotball Championship Series II at the Neta & Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl on the beautiful campus of the defending NCAA Division II National Champions CSU-Pueblo on Sunday, November 20, 2016.


·         Official Practice start on Monday, August 1, 2016

·         Unlimited Practices

·         Coaches determine practice days and times.


·         Teams will be grouped by age as follows: 6u, 7u, 8u, 9u, 10u, 11u,  12u, 13/14u

           (Age as of July 31st).

·         All CYFL divisions are competitive.


·         16 Player Minimum (10 Player Minimum 6u)

·         35 Player Maximum (16 Player Maximum 6u)

·         Players may be added onto rosters thru September 16, 2016. $50 Roster Change fee applies after September 1, 2016


·         Season will consist of 7-8 regular season games plus 1/2 additional games for playoffs and championship game.

·         Games will mostly be played on Sunday with the possibility of weeknight & Saturday.

·         There is no mandatory play count, this is competitive youth football! Although it is recommended each child plays during the game, it is at the sole discretion of the coaches. Note: It is the responsibility of the parent to make the decision on whether their child plays at this competitive level within the CYFL or if their child should compete at a recreational level within another league that has a mandatory play count.


·         All teams and/or organizations will need to furnish their own playing equipment including helmets, shoulder pads, 7-piece pads, cleats, and game uniforms.

Game Rules, Playing Time:

·         National Federation High School/CHSAA rules in effect unless stated by league rules otherwise.

·         The CYFL will use a 4 12-minute running clock quarters for all divisions. Clock will stop during all time-outs and during the last 2-minutes of the 2nd & the 4th quarter on incomplete passes and out of bounds plays if the score is within 20 points

·         6u (7-man)  


·         The CYFL does not have a weight restrictions in any division, therefore we do not have weigh-ins.


·         Individual Team Registration $125 per player

Required Documents:

·         All participants must provide proof of age with Birth Certificate or Passport.

·         All participants must have a current AAU membership.

·         All Independent Teams and Organizations must be a registered AAU Club.

·         All coaches must be certified through CDC, USA Football Level I Coaches Certification, Positve Coaches Alliance and Purchase a Non-Athlete AAU Membership.

·         All coaches must a complete a background check through AAU
